How to Prepare Your Home for Interior Painting With Children and Pets

Interior painting is easier and safer when occupants, belongings, and access are planned before the crew arrives.
Create a daily access plan
Identify which rooms will be unavailable, where occupants will sleep or work, and which bathroom or kitchen functions must remain accessible.
Secure children, pets, and sensitive items
Keep pets away from open containers, tools, wet coatings, and doors used by the crew. Move medications, food, aquariums, valuables, and fragile electronics out of the work zone as appropriate.
Discuss ventilation and sensitivities
Tell the estimator about respiratory sensitivities, pregnancy, young children, older adults, or animals that may influence product and scheduling decisions. Follow product instructions and maintain safe ventilation.
Prepare walls without hiding conditions
Remove wall décor and small items, but point out stains, cracks, loose paint, or past moisture before they are covered. Do not patch major defects without telling the contractor.
Agree on the return-to-use schedule
Dry-to-touch is not always the same as fully cured. Ask when furniture can return, doors can close normally, cabinets can be used, and cleaned surfaces can be washed.
